New free online course untangles the EU AI Act

Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund, has published a new course in its Data Economy ABC series, called “Fair rules for AI” (12 March 2025). The free course promises clear information on what the EU AI Act — which enters into force in stages — means in practice for companies and AI developers.

A short summary of the course is below, and you can join it for free via the link at the end.

About Sitra’s new online course

The course aims to improve AI literacy and to help people recognise the risks associated with AI.

It is aimed in particular at companies that need to understand how the AI Act affects their own operations, including the obligations around training staff. The first requirements of the EU AI Act (Articles 1–5) became applicable in February 2025.

“This is a free online course that may also be used commercially, for example in corporate training. We have packaged the materials for reuse under a CC BY-SA licence, and an English version is coming in April,” writes Tarmo Toikkanen, Leading Specialist at Sitra, in his own LinkedIn post.

The course is openly available to everyone in the eOppiva learning environment, and completing it does not require signing in. You also get an informal certificate for completing it. Sitra suggests setting aside about one hour.

“Fair rules for AI” complements Sitra’s Data Economy ABC course series, which covers data regulation and the challenges and opportunities of a digital society.
