Deep Research – a week of human work in fifteen minutes?

OpenAI released its Deep Research model to all paying users in early March. What is it exactly, and can it really do the equivalent of a week of human work in fifteen minutes?

Below is a summary of the topic by Tekoälyfoorumi’s editor-in-chief, Aku Nikkola.

How does Deep Research work?

Deep Research is OpenAI’s newest AI agent, capable of independently carrying out multi-step research tasks on the web. In practice it analyses large volumes of information, combines material from different sources, and produces comprehensive reports whose accuracy, according to OpenAI, is on a par with the work of a human analyst.

In traditional research work, an expert searches for, evaluates, and combines information from numerous sources, which can take days or weeks. According to OpenAI’s chief product officer Kevin Weil, Deep Research does “a week of human work in fifteen minutes.”

How does Deep Research differ from OpenAI’s earlier models?

Unlike traditional AI models, which answer individual questions quickly, Deep Research spends 5–30 minutes on a single research request. During that time it works through hundreds of web sources, refines its questions, adapts its search strategy, and combines information from different sources through multi-step reasoning.

Deep Research works independently, carrying out the whole analysis process without constant user steering. That makes it particularly useful for in-depth background research, competitor analysis, and expert-level reporting — tasks where traditional language models have previously stayed superficial.

The model’s performance has also clearly advanced: in testing it is more than 8 times as accurate as GPT-4o, OpenAI’s most widely used model.
